Security and Safety

Personal Security:

Please notify your nurse by pressing the nurse call-bell if someone you do not know comes into your room. All NJCH staff must wear their ID badges and must ask permission to enter your room and announce the reason for the visit and the department they are from.

Valuables and patient’s private belongings:

The hospital does not accept responsibility for items of value unless they are deposited with security.

Please do not bring any item of value, the hospital is a public building and we cannot be responsible for valuables left in your possession. If you have no other option, please call your nurse.

To request for items to be placed in the hospital safe, please inform your nurse. The nurse will document any valuables which you bring and place them in the hospital safe until discharge.

You are responsible for all personal property that is left in your possession. Should the property become lost or damaged, the hospital is not liable. Please do not place your valuable in your linens.

Lost and found:

If you lose something during your stay, please notify your nurse immediately, and she will make every effort to help find it.

A lost and found service is provided at NJCH security department. Articles that are found and turned into the security department may be claimed after proper description and identification have been made.

Patient Safety:

Medication:

All medications you take while in the hospital are prescribed by your physician, dispensed by a licensed pharmacist, and administered by a nurse. For your safety you may not administer your own drugs or keep personal medications at your bedside, unless directed by your physician. Nurses will keep your home medications for you after your physician have seen them, until your discharge. For your own safety, the hospital does not allow bringing or requesting food from outside, because some kind of food can cause a drug – food interaction, and this may affect your health.

Oxygen:

Special regulations are in effect when a patient is receiving oxygen. Electrically operated equipment, aerosol products and petroleum based product (i.e. Vaseline and Chap Stick) are not permitted in this area.

Wheelchairs:

Wheelchairs are available in all nursing units; however since getting in and out of the wheelchair without proper assistance could be hazardous, please ask for help from a member of the hospital staff.

Use of cellular phones:

NJCH does not permit the use of cellular phones and they are prohibited designated areas since these devices have been determined to interfere with some medical equipment. We seek your cooperation in refraining from the use of cellular phones. Generally these areas are marked with special signs, and include: intensive and post-intensive care units, maternity, surgery, and other special care units.

Accidents:

All accidents/ falls must be reported to staff. Each incident will be investigated, to identify the reasons and try to avoid similar events in the future.

Fire precautions:

NJCH has trained professionals to handle fire situations. If a fire takes place in your surroundings, do not panic, use the nurse call immediately. If you are close to the phone call the operator and inform them that there is a fire stating your location, the building, the floor, or the room.

Fire and disaster drills:

For your protection, the hospital conducts fire and disaster drills regularly. If a drill takes place, please remain in your room until the “all clear” is announced, or a staff member informs you of any necessary procedures. Please note that the audible and visual alarms may be silenced before the “all clear” is paged, but stay in place until the announcement is given.

Be sure that during drills, patient care will not be affected.
